[India] BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS): Transition to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023

Regarding the government gazette published by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on November 7, 2025, concerning the transition from current standards IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010 and IS 616: 2017 to the new standard IS/IEC 62368: Part 1: 2023, our laboratory provides the following application guidelines:

1. Latest Updates: New Standard Now Open for Application

Effective immediately, product categories previously covered under IS 13252 or IS 616 are now officially open for BIS certification applications using the new standard, IS/IEC 62368-1: 2023.

2. Key Compliance Deadlines

Existing models registered under a BIS R-number must complete the standard upgrade by the following deadline. Failure to comply will result in the expiration of the model’s registration:

• Mandatory Implementation Date: November 2, 2028.

• Withdrawal of Old Standards: After November 1, 2028, IS 13252 and IS 616 will be officially withdrawn and replaced.

3. Upgrade Application Process

Requirement Confirmation: Please confirm which product models within your existing certificates need to maintain BIS recognition, organized by “per report.”

• Sample Submission: For models to be retained, please provide one (1) unit of the main model and three (3) units for power-related products to be sent to an Indian laboratory for upgrade testing.

• Lead Time: Estimated 8 to 10 weeks.

Note: As a surge in applications is expected during the initial phase of the new standard’s implementation, this lead time is an estimate only. Actual progress will depend on BIS review timelines and individual laboratory workloads.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will update the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) portal and release detailed guidelines in due course. We will continue to track the latest developments for you. Should you have any questions regarding the upgrade details, please feel free to contact your dedicated sales representative.
