On June 9, 2025, Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) issued a notification announcing the termination of Type Approval certification and importation for devices that exclusively support 2G and/or 3G cellular technologies.
This regulation will affect all new products equipped with only 2G or 3G capabilities. The effective date for this directive is June 30, 2025.
Summary of Changes:
Effective from June 30, 2025:
The NBTC will no longer issue new Type Approval certificates (i.e., Class B certificates) for devices that only support 2G and/or 3G.
The importation of 2G/3G-only devices into Thailand will no longer be permitted.
The NBTC will discontinue self-labeling authorization and the sale of labels for 2G/3G-only equipment.
Important Clarifications:
Multi-mode Devices: If a device supports other cellular technologies (e.g., 4G/5G) in addition to 2G/3G, the NBTC will continue to issue Type Approval certificates as usual. This regulation does not affect these devices.
Existing Products: 2G/3G-only devices that were previously certified and are already in the Thai market or in the possession of end-users can continue to be sold and used.
Scope: This announcement applies only to new models or products intended for import into Thailand after the effective date of June 30, 2025.
